The Thunder franchise dates back to 1967, when the Seattle SuperSonics joined the NBA as an expansion team and became the Pacific Northwest's first major professional sports franchise. The SuperSonics played 41 seasons in Seattle, winning the franchise's only NBA title in 1979, mostly at what opened in 1962 as Seattle Center Coliseum—renovated and renamed KeyArena in 1995 after a season away at the Tacoma Dome during construction.
